With Metallica and Judy
garland in his playlist,it's obvious this alt rocker has no
limitations when it comes to his favorite tunes.
"Cherub rock"
smashing pumpkins-siamese dream(1993)
"This song has what
is probably my favorite guitar solo because it really screams at
you. I used to fill a five disc changer with cd's containing songs
that had guitar solos i could play:I did'nt like to go out much back
then, but it was the most fun in the world for me to do a 20-song jam
with the cd changer.I think i can play the cherub rock solo almost
note for note I'm 99 percent there. There are a couple of backward
tape effects in there that i'm not so sure about."
"Bizarre Love
Triangle"New Order-substance(1987)
"I play this one a
lot when i deejay.I don't see how you could'nt dance to it.it has
such a huge chorus:it gets me excited.i never get sick of it."
"As Tears Go by" The
Cure-Galore(1997)
"There are a couple
of good versions on Galore has bigger horns and instrumentation. It
just jumps out of the stereo.Obviously, the cure have been a big
influence on the killers,i love them."
"Harvester of
sorrow"Metallica..and justice for all(1988)
"This album is a
masterpiece.its dark and has a great feeling, overall. There are so
many great riffs on it,and the song structures are interesting:there
are lots of different parts, some recurring and some not.All the
songs are strong, but harvester of sorrow really stands out for
me.James Hetfield's voice sounds great on it.I would'nt say
Metallica suck now,but i think they were at their peak with ..and
justice for all."
"Somewhere over the
Rainbow"Judy Garland-The wizard of oz
"All of us in the
band were just talking about how good this song is.it's a real
pretty song, and it's always been one of my favorites I can't help
it.But i only like the original(1939)movie version.Judy Garland sang
lots of other versions, but in her later years she did not have the
sweet voice she had when she made that movie."
"On the Guilt"Nirvana-with
the lights out
"It's a lesser known
nirvana song, but it's my favorite i first heard it on a split single
that i bought a long time ago.It had Nirvana on one side and the
jesus lizard on the other.i stopped listening to nirvana about five
years ago,but i still love them, and i've got with the lights out
which has some of their b-sides.i'm eager to dig into it cause their
b sides were good."
"Home and dry"pet
shop boys
"im a huge pet shop
boys fan and this is my favorite song of theirs.its great to put on
when im driving around Vegas. There's not much guitar on
it.However,Johnny Marr plays on the album,so the guitar that's on
there is really good."
"Hey Jude"The Beatles
"That one has always
been my favorite Beatles tune.I love the way paul mccartney starts
right in with the verse there's no intro or anything.the vocal
itself is the hook.Brandon Flowers and i debate this one a lot.he
thinks the outro is too long and that it ruins the song.but i like
it,especially how paul's singing gets soulful the longer it goes
on."
"Space oddity"David
Bowie
"i first heard this
song when i was six years old,in kindergarten.for whatever reason,my
friend Adam Barker had a david bowie tape.i was a huge star wars and
star trek fan.still am.when i was six,there was not that much i
could relate to,but i understood that Bowie was talking about space
stuff, maybe he was talking about drug stuff, but i thought he was
talking about space stuff."
"Ordinary world"Duran
Duran
"A nice melancholy
song,John Taylor is one of the most underated bass players, just
because he was in Duran Duran,i guess.but he's rally talented.
"Thunderstruck"AC/DC
"we use thunderstruck
to test our P.A.system,so i get to hear it every day.it's one of the
best songs to play loud.at that volume,it's so massive.it's just
ac/dc at their best driving bass, loud drums and really great guitar
parts."
