Of course it's about Dave's mom passing away and Brandon's mother being diagnosed with cancer. What people dont really talk about is the build up on the song. They have portrayed the exact feelings of what it feels like to hear when someone dies. From "The universe is standing still" and "I feel my faded mind begin to roam" where, when you first hear that they'ved passed. Your whole word stops and your mind goes quiet but in the back of your mind you're feeling the blow.

"Up above the world so high" is talking about the spirit being in heaven.
