Human Well by dancer
Hunter S. Thompson meant a group of mindless people as can be seen
in some of these lyrics "And sometimes I get nervous When I see an
open door (taking different opportunities) I think human is more about whether you are a leader or a follower, or in this case the puppet or puppeteer. In the beginning, Brandon is the puppet, hence the phrases "when the call came down the line"(command on the strings), "up to to the platform of surrender" (a stage, where he's surrendered control). He then braces himsef and "cuts the cord", his strings, and takes control. Are we human (puppeteer) or are we dancer (puppet)? Well, what i think is. Are we human or...are we dancer!!! And that, my lovers. Is what the song is about. despite what bran-flo says about this being a nod to hunter s. thompson, i think it's more a response to the way sam's town was received (especially because they seem to have been sitting on this one since sam's town was released). i think he's subtly digging at the people who slagged ST (it was an album which was quite pining, heart-felt and nostalgic) and compared it to the dance-friendly hot fuss. It just seems like a light dig at the people who rather they were a "dancer" band (hot fuss), rather than a purely human one (sam's town)
