KROQ'S Weenie Roast May 21,2005

From  ocregister

The Killers-What a difference a year has made. At Weenie Roast XI, these Las Vegans bumbled through a listless, hesitant set during the brightest part of the day for a mostly uninterested crowd. Now they're the hottest thing going, and seemingly everyone on hand was well-acquainted with every song on their debut, ''Hot Fuss,'' including lesser-knowns like ''Jenny Was a Friend of Mine'' and ''Andy You're a Star.''

Drawn in by Brandon Flowers theatrical air, his playboy-on-the-Riviera get-up and occasional awkward moves (careful with that robot dance, you ham), the quartet's swelling ranks of acolytes were easily overcome, making this the day's first audience-unifying performance. ''All These Things That I've Done'' was expectedly transcendent, ''Smile Like You Mean It'' was enveloping, ''Mr. Brightside'' still hasn't been worn out and everything was played with gusto and precision. Give these guys five years and a message beyond mere modernism and Coldplay might have a serious rival for that next-U2 crown.
