Diary of a Virgin Festivaler: The Killers kill!

National post

When Brandon "Fatty" Flowers took the stage, he had thousands of fans in the palm of his hand. Was he wearing a gold-sequined blazer to cover up a newly acquired beer belly? Nah, Flowers looked as trim as always (Brandon, we kid because we love!). So we'll never know why the no-photo ban was put in place, but fans didn't care. The Killers delivered the best set of Day 2, and the crowd showed its love by singing along impressively — and loudest — to Mr. Brightside.

Back to that sequined blazer — It was perhaps the brightest outfit on the Island this weekend, but taking a look at festgoers, it's apparent that fall fashion has arrived. For those making a shopping list, look for rubber boots (colourful is good!), Afghan scarves and Twiggy-esque sunglasses (which I guess could now be called Olsen twin-esque).

Las Vegas's favourite band was followed by headliners Smashing Pumpkins, who seem past their prime. The Pumpkins didn't live up to their top blling, limiting their classics for their forgettable new album. Meanwhile, over at Bacardi's B-Live stage, Dirty Vegas was trying to hold its own. The DJs had a captive and energetic audience until the Pumpkins took to the stage, but kept going even when only about 50 people lingered in the tent-turned-club. Those who stuck around were lucky as they got to hear the group's big hit Days Go By in an intimate setting.

Best Fan of the Festival award goes to the nine-ish year old girl who was clutching a beachball in one hand and pumping her fist in the air to The Killer's Somebody Told Me.

Much Music

The Killers just ended their set about 20 minutes ago and now everyone is waiting for The Smashing Pumpkins to go on at 9pm (stay tuned for their set in MuchAXS!).

The band wouldn't allow us to record or stream any of their set, so we're sorry you didn't get to see it. :( And they also wouldn't let us take any photos. So, If you got some good ones, please upload them so I can see what you saw! But if you're wondering...Brandon was decked out in glitter 'n gold - he had a gold blazer on, one of those fancy bowtie doohickeys and glitter all over his face. He looked goooood.

Some highlights from their set: Bones, Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Smile Like You Mean It, Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, When You Were Young and the finale, All These Things I've Done, during which I handed out sparklers to the fifty people closest to me and we all lit them simultaneously. It was beautiful!! I hope Brandon saw it and loved it. LOL.

8:01 p.m...

Whatever you think about the Killers and lead singer Brandon Flowers, they certainly try to appear like they're the biggest band in the world.

Their decision not to allow any photographers or videographers in the pit during their set, didn't make them any friends among the news hordes here to cover the festival. In addition to that they were too 'cool' to allow the streaming of Motorola text messages along the bottom of the video screens. Bjork demanded the same thing last night, but she's Bjork.

Flowers also doesn't give fans much live, varrying little from any of his appearances on Letterman or SNL. He appears a little robotic in his movements at times.

Nevertheless when Flowers and the boys got down to business, they put on one of the best sets of the weekend. Against a "Sam's Tour" backdrop bedecked with Christmas lights, Flowers led off with "Sam's Town." Flower's introduced the band as "Hello brothers and sisters, we are The Killers." The only other words he spoke was to introduce the song "Bones," with a "We've all got hearts, we've all got problems and we've all got bones."

Killer's set list:

Sam's Town
Enterlude
When You Were Young
Bones
Somebody Told Me
Smile Like You Mean It
Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine
Uncle Jonny
Read My Mind
Mr. Brightside
For Reason's Unknown
All The Things I've Done

Live update: T.O. Virgin Fest '07

Sorry, my update is short and sweet -- I'm in dire need of some nourishment. Update: Sorry folks, the Killers have just announced that they want no photos taken during their upcoming set. Mr. Flowers, I hear, has put on a few pounds. -- John Williams

7:38 p.m...

A "no photos" order from the Killers didn't stop this guy from trying. Not very good pics, but it was the best I could do given the circumstances.

Cook will be back with a synopsis of their set.

By the way, Brandon Flowers looks pretty fit to me. -- John Williams

Diary of a Virgin Festivaler: The Killers as killjoys?

National Post

Unlike sunny Day 1, it's gray on Day 2, but the stronger lineup has kept the crowd's enthusiasm up. Three bands have already played the mainstage and already the crowd has filled in handsomely, anticipating the main acts of Stars, Metric, The Killers and Smashing Pumpkins. But the mood among the media tent is mixed, with many photographers griping that The Killers aren't allowing the press to take photos of them during their set. No doubt the complaints will subside when the media-types realize that the photo-ban will offer them an hour of unhindered drinking.

Diary of a Virgin Festivaler: Is Brandon Flowers Fat?

National Post

Update on The Killers Photo Ban: One publicist mentioned to a fellow reporter that Brandon Flowers has gained some weight, implying that he doesn't want photos of his expanded girth. If true, Flowers' ego, paranoia and bloated self-image is growing to Axl Rose proportions ..
